Active Sofia 65+

Active Sofia 65+ is a project implemented by Multi Kulti Collective that addresses loneliness among Bulgarians and migrants aged 65+ through weekly in-person activities organised in Sofia and led by facilitators, trainers, and volunteers. These include discussions, book clubs, cooking classes, creative workshops, language practice, mindfulness sessions, gymnastics, nature walks, museum visits, and cultural exchanges. Activities are interactive and inclusive, creating a welcoming space for participants to connect, reduce isolation, and build meaningful relationships.

What it sets out to do

Active Sofia 65+ aims to reduce loneliness among older adults and bridge the gap between migrants and locals through regular opportunities for social connection, learning, and community participation.

What seems to make it work

The programme works because it combines regularity, accessibility, and a strong sense of community. Weekly activities create routine and continuity, which are essential for building trust and lasting relationships. The design is highly participatory and informal, allowing older adults to actively engage, share experiences, and shape the space themselves. Bringing together Bulgarians and migrants adds an intercultural dimension that fosters curiosity, mutual support, and a sense of belonging, with many workshops led by migrants themselves.

It is implemented by an experienced NGO with strong facilitation skills and a wide network of guest speakers, trainers, and volunteers, which ensures diverse and high-quality content. The programme is low-barrier (free of charge, welcoming atmosphere, flexible participation), making it accessible to people who might otherwise remain isolated. The mix of social, cultural, educational, and physical activities responds to different interests and needs, increasing motivation and sustained engagement.

What gets in the way

The main challenge is reaching the most isolated older adults, especially those with limited mobility, low digital skills, or no existing social networks. Despite open and free access, many individuals remain difficult to engage without targeted outreach or referrals through social and health services. Language barriers also initially limited interaction between Bulgarians and migrants, requiring more intentional facilitation and bilingual support.

Moving it somewhere else

Yes, the model is highly transferable, as it is simple, low-cost, and based on universal human needs for connection and belonging. It can work in different countries and contexts, particularly where older adults experience loneliness and social isolation.

To replicate it, organisations would need a trusted local coordinator (such as an NGO or community centre), access to an accessible and welcoming space, and a network of facilitators, including migrants, volunteers, and professionals. Activities should be adapted to the local cultural context, language, and interests of participants. Strong outreach is essential to reach isolated individuals, and partnerships with local institutions (e.g. municipalities, social services, or health providers) can help ensure sustainability and wider impact.
