mutual support groups for people with mental illness/challenges

The mutual support group for old and new members of the Association for the Promotion of Mental Health Feniks Split offers, every Thursday, an opportunity for honest togetherness where we can freely be who we are, without labels, shame or judgement.

Feel free to join us, without prior notice, on THURSDAYS from 7–9pm at the Multimedia Cultural Centre RAZRED (Classroom) in the Dom Mladih (Youth Centre), east entrance (opposite the School of Economics), 3rd floor, Ulica Slobode 28 (Freedom Street 28), in Split!

Mutual support groups are open, free get-togethers intended for people with mental health difficulties, experiences of altered states of consciousness, with or without a formal diagnosis or experience of psychiatric hospitalisation. They are conceived as a space for psychosocial empowerment through honest conversation, togetherness and mutual human support in the recovery process.

The groups are not run by professionals by qualification, but rather this is a community of experts by experience of coping with psychological pain. The group processes are guided by 2 trained facilitators whose role is to create a safe and tolerant environment in which participants have equal space and time to express themselves. Rules of equality, fairness, confidentiality and anonymity are respected.

In our groups we meet to talk as human beings.

Brave, wounded, hurt, rejected, misunderstood people.

People who struggle with their emotional vulnerability and low tolerance for a meaningless life that comes down to mere survival. People who have been given various, often multiple, labels: oversensitive, neurotic, depressive, schizophrenic, borderline, bipolar, oddballs, madmen. Regardless of our wounds, whether they are diagnoses we have given ourselves or labels others have put on us, we come together to listen to one another, to comfort, embrace, support, encourage and make each other laugh.

We hope you will join us, and that these get-togethers will make your world at least a little less grey, lonely and cold. We hope you will find words for every part of yourself, even the chipped ones full of scars, and we hope you can gather them together with the community around you and discover that you are, in fact, not alone. Because friendship is medicine!

Support groups are FREE and open to all citizens, regardless of age, education or specific difficulties. You don't need to sign up in advance, just come, you'll be welcome!

They are part of the programme "Zasučimo rukave za mentalno zdravlje" (Let's Roll Up Our Sleeves for Mental Health) of UDRUGA FENIKS SPLIT, funded by the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy and the Ministry of Health, co-funded by the City of Split and Split-Dalmatia County. The content of the programme is the sole responsibility of the association and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Ministries. We run the programme in partnership with the Family Centre, the Split-Dalmatia Regional Office, and the association Permakultura Dalmacija (Permaculture Dalmatia).

What it sets out to do

to create a safe space for honest conversation about challenging states and feelings, to contribute to the recovery of people with mental illness

Who it reaches

City of Split, Split-Dalmatia County

Who runs it

NGO Udruga Feniks Split / Association for the Promotion of Mental Health Feniks Split

What seems to make it work

Free activity, mutuality, being outside institutional settings, run by experts by experience (peer support experts), a safe space for honest expression

What gets in the way

Lack of space to work in; it has been run on a voluntary basis for many years by inclusive volunteers; there is no adequate funding

How it is funded

Organising and running the activity is voluntary, but refreshments and the space for holding the activity are, for now, provided by various donors through project funding; currently the activity is part of the Udruga Feniks Split project "Zasučimo rukave za mentalno zdravlje" (Let's Roll Up Our Sleeves for Mental Health), funded by the Ministry of Labour, Pension System, Family and Social Policy, co-funded by the Ministry of Health and the City of Split and Split-Dalmatia County.

Moving it somewhere else

The activity is applicable in different countries and cultural contexts
